The perpetual co-occurrence of mycotoxins contaminating food & feed crops represents a significant food safety concern in the world and especially Africa. Despite local and international research efforts, Africa and many other developing countries, are plagued by mycotoxigenic fungi and their mycotoxins due to the frequency, complexity and inconsistent occurrence as a result of variable crop production and storage conditions. This high-level conference will be a platform for academic exchange between researchers, government, and industry. It aims to strengthen the global knowledge on mycotoxins, extend the cooperative network, promote the sharing and development of mycotoxin management technologies and strategies.
For this conference, the International Society of Mycotoxicology (ISM) awards four travel grants to motivated students from low- and middle-income countries.
2. Eligibility criteria
This call is open to researchers who are affiliated to and working at a mycotoxins research institution in low- and middle-income countries at the time of application and who submitted an abstract.
The applications must contain a strong motivation on why they should receive this travel grant.
3. How to apply
Applicants must send a i) motivation letter and ii) curriculum vitae in PDF-format to the president of the ISM Sarah.DeSaeger@UGent.be before 20 June 2022 at 5 pm (CET).

MYTOX-SOUTH aims to increase human capacity in mycotoxin research & development, focusing on low-and middle income countries to tackle the mycotoxin problem and the associated food safety and food security issues. In this way, MYTOX-SOUTH organizes together with the African Society of Mycotoxicology (ASM) an international mycotoxin conference in Stellenbosch (South-Africa) in September 2022 (visit the link for more information: https://africansocietyofmycotoxicology.org/MYTOX-SOUTH-Conference/). The Organizing Committee programmed a special session in the conference-outline for technical staff-members and researchers. This “Trouble-shooting session for mycotoxin detection” will be used to discuss and solve the most important technical challenges present during mycotoxin analysis. For this reason, MYTOX-SOUTH makes a call to receive from technical staff-members and researchers specific technical challenges which they encounter in their respective laboratories/analysis protocols during their mycotoxin analysis. Most of the technical challenges received will be discussed during the special session in the conference and session organizers (MYTOX-SOUTH technical staff from Ghent University) will explain how to solve them. Moreover, MYTOX-SOUTH is glad to announce that among the received application, three travel grants to attend the 3rd African Symposium on Mycotoxicology will be distributed. The grants offer an unique opportunity to improve the technical skills and mycotoxin knowledge as well as to establish a great professional experience.
This call is open to staff-members and researchers who are affiliated to and working at a mycotoxins research institution in Africa at the time of application and who will attend the conference. The applicants must show an important technical challenge present in their mycotoxin analysis which they have troubles to solve or they do not know how to solve it. The presented technical challenges must be inside one of the following 3 topics:
•Sample preparation: extraction methods, clean-up methods, multi-mycotoxin methods, …
•Analysis methods: HPLC-UV, HPLC-FL, LC-MS/MS.
•Data processing: all aspects linked to mycotoxin identification, quantification and interpretation.
The applications must contain in detail the clear description of the problem as well as why it is so important to solve the technical challenge for future mycotoxin analysis in their facilities. A short video presenting the technical challenge should be added in the application.
MYTOX-SOUTH will cover travel expenses, conference registration and accommodation for the 3 most relevant applications.
4.How to apply
Applicants have to fill the APPLICATION FORM and send it in PDF-format together with the short video to firstname.lastname@example.org before June 20th, 2022 at 5 pm (CET).
